The Science of Learning: Supporting Student Success Through Retrieval Practice

In the week before Term 2 commenced, all teachers across Catholic Education Sandhurst schools engaged in a professional development program led by Dr Jared Cooney-Horvath. The focus of this training was the science of learning, a field that explores how students learn most effectively.

One key principle introduced was retrieval practice—a strategy that helps students strengthen their memory by regularly recalling information they've learned. Think of it as exercise for the brain: the more often we practise retrieving knowledge, the stronger and more durable those memory pathways become.

Retrieval practice often involves short, daily review activities that revisit key content from the previous day, week, or term. These reviews help students make connections, recognise patterns, and build confidence in their understanding. Importantly, retrieval practice is low-stakes—it’s not a test, but an opportunity to consolidate learning in a supportive way.

Research shows that even a few minutes of retrieval practice each day can lead to significant improvements in student outcomes. That’s why it’s now an integral part of our teaching approach. We also encourage families to regularly ask their children about what they're learning at school—these conversations can have a real and lasting impact.

Year 10 Art Exhibition: Journey at Tank’s Art Gallery

Notre Dame College was very proud to present the Year 10 Art Exhibition: Journey at Tank’s Art Gallery last week.

The work included Ms Goonan’s Faces and Places and Paint, Pottery and Print class. The exhibition showed a diverse range of artworks made by the students and included ceramic sculptures, plates, still life drawings, large pop art paintings and reduction print making.

These works exemplified how extraordinarily talented these students are. The Art Department and College staff would like to congratulate these students on a wonderful achievement.

Well done to all students and thank you very much Tank.

NAIDOC Week 2025

Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC at Notre Dame College

2025 NAIDOC Week Theme: "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy"

This year marks a powerful milestone — 50 years of NAIDOC Week, a time to honour and elevate the voices, culture, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” not only celebrates the achievements of the past, but also looks ahead to a bright future — one shaped by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.

Although NAIDOC Week officially falls during the school holidays, Notre Dame College will be celebrating in Week 1 of Term 3 (Monday 21st – Friday 25th July).

Join us in Sacred Heart Hall during lunchtimes, where students will be running a series of cultural workshops and activities, including:

  • Emu feather necklace making
  • Weaving
  • Painting

There will also be art displays, photos, and posters showcasing NAIDOC Week across the past five decades.

Everyone is welcome. Come along and be part of this important celebration — recognising our shared history, culture, and future.
