Justice Matters

Earlier this week I had the privilege of gathering with 80 students from across 10 schools within the Sandhurst Diocese for the annual Justice Matters Camp.

Notre Dame College participated with 10 students who were all keen to explore more about what justice means and how it can be prominent within our school community. Focusing on the ‘See, Judge, Act’ model students were introduced to an understanding of what justice is and why it does actually matter in our society.

Students were given different examples of non-just situations and were called on to respond to these issues. Across numerous workshops students were able to explore and share their understandings and a combined sense of solidarity emerged amongst the group.

On the second day, Lyndel Annett our Religious Education Leader, along with Molly Walters our Catholic Identity Trainee and student Social Justice Leader Charlotte Stevens, led most of the activities ensuring that students left with a keen understanding of charity vs awareness vs advocacy. In the final sessions students worked to develop a plan of action to combat injustices in our community.

I look forward to working with these students to ensure that all they worked on during the camp is enacted with our school community. It was a great privilege to see our students with such a keen interest in standing up and advocating for other people.
