Parent Information: Term-Time Holidays and Attendance

From time to time, families consider taking holidays during the school term. We understand there can be important family reasons for this; however, it is important to be aware of the legal requirements and educational impact of taking students out of school during term time.

Under Victorian law, parents and carers have a legal obligation to ensure that children attend school every day it is open, unless there is an approved reason. Holidays during school time are not automatically approved and must be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Requesting a Term-Time Holiday

If you are considering a holiday during the school term, it is essential that you:

  • Provide the College with plenty of notice - at minimum of four weeks notice is required.
  • Submit a formal request for approval to the relevant Head of House/Community
  • Wait for confirmation from the College before making final arrangements

Approval is at the discretion of the Principal and will take into account factors such as the length of the absence, the timing within the school year, and the potential impact on learning.

Approved vs Unapproved Absences

If a holiday is approved, the absence will be recorded as a reasonable excuse. A learning plan will be devised and documented for the period of the absence. If a holiday is taken without approval, the absence is recorded as unapproved, which may:

  • Contribute to concerns about attendance
  • Trigger follow-up from the College
  • Lead to further action if absences become significant

Important Considerations for Senior Students (Years 11 and 12)

For students in Years 11 and 12, the expectations are particularly rigorous. Coursework, assessments, and attendance requirements are tightly regulated to meet VCE, VET and VM requirements. As a result:

  • The College may not be able to accommodate missed learning or assessments ,
  • Students may miss critical coursework, SACs, or instruction
  • Students may be unable to meet the attendance requirements of their programmes
  • This can significantly affect their ability to successfully meet outcome requirements

In some cases, this may mean that a student is unable to achieve satisfactory completion of a subject, regardless of the reason for absence.

Our Strong Recommendation

We advise that families plan holidays outside of school term time wherever possible. Regular attendance is essential to:

  • Maintain continuity of learning
  • Support academic success
  • Ensure students remain connected to their teachers and peers

In Summary

  • Term-time holidays are not an automatic right
  • Advance notice and approval are required
  • Unapproved absences may lead to attendance concerns
  • Senior students are at significant risk of not meeting course requirements if absent

We encourage all families to carefully consider the impact of term-time travel and to contact the relevant Head of House/Community at the College early to discuss any planned absences.

Thank you for supporting your child’s education and attendance.

Bus Travellers

Bus Behaviour Reminder for Families

We would like to make families aware that there have been some recent concerns regarding student behaviour on school buses. In particular, issues have included the use of inappropriate language and rubbish being left behind.

We kindly ask for your support in reinforcing with your child the importance of respectful and safe behaviour while travelling on the bus. Students are expected to:

  • Use respectful and appropriate language
  • Treat others with kindness and consideration
  • Follow all instructions given by the bus driver
  • Refrain from behaviours such as bullying, aggression, vandalism, smoking, or vaping
  • Take all rubbish with them when leaving the bus

These expectations are in place to ensure that bus travel remains safe and pleasant for all students.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the vast majority of our students who consistently display respectful behaviour while travelling. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and contribute to a positive environment for everyone.

Thank you for your continued support.

General Assembly

On Tuesday 23 June, the College held our student-led General Assembly.

Our College Captains, House Captains, and Specialist Leaders spoke about how the year is currently going and what there is to look forward to, in areas such as The Arts, Sports, and Sustainability.

Year 12 Student Oscar Emanuelli delivered an insightful speech about sustainability around the school. Then, Heads of Houses and House Captains played a fun and competitive bottle-flip game.

Featuring a performance of the "Spirit of Notre Dame" from the cast of our College Production and "Hotel California" by student band 'Dirty Denim', the assembly was full of entertainment!

June 2026 Debutante Balls

Last Friday and Saturday night we held the final Notre Dame College Debutante Balls, as from 2027, the Debutante Balls will transition to St Brendan’s Parish.

We would like to acknowledge and express sincere gratitude to Maree Geisler for her outstanding contribution to the Debutante Balls at Notre Dame College since 2009. Her dedication to the planning, coordination and preparation of students over many years has provided countless young people with memorable experiences and a strong sense of confidence and belonging.

Maree’s commitment has been exemplary, and we are deeply appreciative of the time, care and passion she has given in a voluntary capacity to this important College tradition.
