Collecting this information early in the year is important because it helps teachers gain a clear starting point for each student’s learning. Students arrive at secondary school from many different primary schools and learning backgrounds. These assessments help teachers understand where each student is in their learning so they can plan lessons that meet students’ needs from the beginning of the year.
The results help teachers identify students’ strengths as well as areas where they may benefit from additional support or extension. Teachers use this information to adjust classroom learning, provide targeted support where needed, extend students who are ready for greater challenge, and monitor progress over time.
The initial Year 7 PAT results have highlighted a number of positive outcomes. In Mathematics, half of our Year 7 students are already performing at the expected level for their age. This provides a strong foundation for learning as students begin their secondary schooling.
In Reading, the results are particularly encouraging, with around 70% of students demonstrating strong reading comprehension skills. This shows that many students are well prepared to engage with the increasing reading demands of secondary school subjects.
In Spelling, the results also show positive foundations, with half of the cohort demonstrating strong spelling skills early in the year.
Importantly, these assessments are only one part of the information teachers use. They are considered alongside classroom work, teacher observations and ongoing assessments to build a clear picture of each student’s learning progress.
These tests are not something students need to study or prepare for. They simply help teachers better understand where students are in their learning so they can be supported effectively throughout the year.
