This coming Sunday we begin the season of Advent. Advent is a significant period in the Catholic Church because it marks a time of spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus.

It is not only about anticipating the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas but also about preparing for His second coming at the end of time. We are invited to reflect deeply on the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love, which are represented by the four candles of the Advent wreath.

Through prayer, Scripture reading, and acts of charity, we are called to renew our hearts and align our lives with God’s will, fostering a sense of readiness and expectation. During this time we are all encouraged to slow down, embrace silence, and cultivate a spirit of watchfulness. The liturgical practices during Advent, such as the use of the colour purple, remind us that this is a time of hopeful waiting rather than immediate celebration.

By focusing on spiritual growth and anticipation, Advent helps Catholics enter Christmas with a deeper sense of gratitude and understanding of the mystery of the Incarnation.
