This coming Saturday we celebrate All Saints Day. It is a day to recognise the holiness of those who lived virtuous lives, often quietly and without public recognition, and to celebrate the unity of the Church in heaven and on earth.

This feast reminds us that sainthood is not reserved for a few extraordinary individuals but is a universal call to holiness for all Christians. We are called to reflect on the stories of so many amazing people who lived lives of heroic Christianity and holiness from the very beginnings of Christianity such as St Peter and St Paul right through the centuries to recent people such as Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II and our one and only Australian Saint, Mary Mackillop.

All of these people, many who are familiar to us, make up a huge library of amazing individuals who provide us with examples of how to live lives of faith. It also serves as a powerful affirmation of the Church’s belief in the communion of saints, where the prayers and intercessions of those in heaven support all of us here on earth. This celebration encourages us all to reflect on the lives of the saints as models of faith, courage, and charity, inspiring us to live out our own vocations with greater devotion.
