A group of students traveled to Winton Wetlands for a day of enculturation as part of the FIRE Carriers project- an initiative which seeks to promote respect, fairness and inclusion for Aboriginal people. Less than an hour east of Shepparton, the wetlands weaves birdlife and wildlife, art and culture into a vast native landscape, creating the perfect backdrop for a cultural immersion.
To be a FIRE Carrier is to exercise an important leadership role in the school community. The group of like-minded individuals are committed to advocate for truth, reconciliation and justice within our community and beyond.
The day included a sacred smoking ritual, a commissioning ceremony welcoming new members, listening to the stories and personal journeys of elders, traditional dance, guided walks through the environment and even a game of musical chairs.

This morning, we were delighted to celebrate the amazing mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our community with a special breakfast and fresh coffee at the College. It was a small gesture to recognise the incredible love, support, and guidance mothers give us every day.
